Robbie Harvey was born and grew up in Jersey in the Channel Islands and is now based in London. He took up the trombone following in the footsteps of his mothers family who come from a brass band background in Scotland. While growing up in Jersey he had the opportunity of learning from some great local musicians who all helped to encourage him to pursue a career in music. He is a past member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
In 2006 age 18 he began studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London with the world renowned trombonist and educator, Denis Wick. During this first year studying, Robbie began playing lead trombone with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. He also during that year won the British Trombone Society's Jiggs Whigham Jazz trombone competition. Having always been hugely interested in Jazz he continued in the second year of the Jazz course at the Guildhall school of music and drama, studying with Malcolm Earle Smith.
In May 2008 he won the BTS Don Lusher competition. Soon after he also won the International Trombone Association's Carl Fontana Jazz competition at the International trombone festival in Salt Lake City UTAH. He was also winner of the 2009 ITA JJ Johnson Jazz competition and 2009 Kai Winding Jazz Ensemble competition.
Robbie has had the pleasure of performing alongside some of the world's finest musicians such as Mark Nightingale, Jiggs Whigham, Gordon Campbell, Bert Boeren, Andy Wood, Peter Erskine, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann and many others. He has appeared with the BBC Radio Big Band, Pete Long's Gillespiana, Andy Panayi's Big band and Quartet, the London Jazz Orchestra, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, John Dankworth and Cleo Laine group amongst many more and has performed at venues such as Ronnie Scotts in London, as well as various venues in Europe and overseas. He has also had the opportunity to play in West End shows such as Oliver. Robbie is a performing artist for Michael Rath trombones.
